Спочатку розберімося, що таке whelk.

Whelk — це морський молюск, морський равлик, якого в Британії традиційно продають у приморських містечках як закуску, часто з оцтом. Для британців старшого покоління це приблизно як для нас купити на пляжі рапанів, креветки чи в'ялену рибу.

Тепер найцікавіше.

У британській англійській слово funny може означати не лише «смішний», а й:

• дивний;
• підозрілий;
• зіпсований;
• «з ним щось не так».

Наприклад:

• The milk tastes funny.
  — Молоко якесь дивне.
• My stomach feels funny.
  — Зі шлунком щось не так.

Тому: a funny whelk = молюск, який виявився несвіжим або підозрілим.

Звідси й виник жартівливий вислів:

He must have eaten a funny whelk. - Мабуть, він з'їв щось не те.

Сьогодні цей вираз часто використовують навіть тоді, коли людина взагалі не їла жодних молюсків.
